2010 - 2011 Awards

Cindy Bryon will oversee a Reading, Riding and Retrofit Green Team Grant for In the Defense of Food written by senior,  Jeremiah Hancock.  This project is to teach students how far their food must travel to get to their plates and create a garden so they can grow their own food.

A TAPAS Grant was given to Theda Rudd for resident artist, Tamiko Ambrose Murray, for a WORDSlam 2011 Workshop.  Ms. Murray will share her poetry writing and performing experience with students and teach them how to refine their slam poetry skills.

A Reading, Riding, and Retrofit Green Team Grant was awarded to Cindy Byron for Infrared Thermometers. These thermometers will assist students in performing energy audits in their homes. Then students will come up with no cost, low cost, and high cost strategies to weatherproofing.

SILSA was awarded a Project Grant for Field Data Collection in the Real World, written by Cyndi Byron and David Kitchmar.  This project will increase access to handheld labquest tools that will allow more students to conduct experiments in Earth and Environmental Science courses.

A Micro-Grant was awarded to Frank Smith for College Financial Aid Resources.  These funds will allow SILSA students and their parents to have references on how to properly apply for financial aid for college.  This project will include informational workshops. 

Lisa Sessions was awarded a Micro-Grant for a Smithsonian Exhibit field trip.  The traveling exhibit called "New Harmonies: The Roots of American Music" and will include performing traditional mountain music.
