Amy Floyd, of Hall Fletcher Elementary School, has been awarded an Innovation Grant for Integrated Play. This project is designed to expand access and educational opportunities to the playground so that it is more accessible for children with motor needs. This project will help update the playground so that it is a space for all children to play and learn together. The features added to the playground will allow typically developing students and students with special needs to build social skills, motor skills and academic skills in an inclusive environment.
Meg Sanford, of Hall Fletcher Elementary School, has been awarded a Parsec Math Literacy and Innovation Grant for Interactive Content Specific Reader's Theatre. This project will offer additional literacy support in the areas of concepts about print, high frequency word knowledge, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and phonemic awareness. These new classroom tools will additionally enhance shared reading time with the whole class, in small groups and independent reading.
Angela Trantham, of Hall Fletcher Elementary School, has been awarded an Innovation Grant for Nooked on Reading. Angela will pilot this program in 2011-2012 by integrating E-readers into her 1st grade classroom. This grant will provide the classroom with E-readers that will be shared by the students. This pilot for the upcoming school year will assess the effectiveness of this tool on increasing student achievement. The aim of the project is to increase reading achievement and student engagement by providing students with E-readers that increase students' accessibility to reading at school and home.
2010 - 2011 Awards
The Parsec Financial Math Literacy Grant was awarded to Ruafika Cobb for Family Math Night. $500.00 was given to help fund two evenings this school year.
Angie Tratham was also awarded the Parsec Financial Math Literacy Grant for Take Home Hands-On Math Kits for the 1st graders. These kits include games students can do a home to improve their math skills.
A Reading, Riding and Retrofit Green Team Grant was awarded for Switch Plates written by Michele Corral. This project will help students learn about energy conservation.
A Micro-Grant was awarded to Meg Sanford to purchase Tools for Hands-on Science in her kindergarten classroom. The science equipment will allow the students to learn about weather.
Hall Fletcher Elementary was awarded an ACSF Innovation Grant for Cougar Time, written by Mark Ackerman, Angie Trantham, and Renoo Sams. This program provides the opportunity for students to participate in after school activities and incorporate drop-out prevention strategies at the elementary level.
Hall Fletcher Elementary was awarded an Energy Education Grant for Energy Education Books, a proposal written by Beverly McBrayer. The school's library media center will purchase a rich supply of reading materials to complement the energy education and conservation curriculum.
Two TAPAS Grants were award to Beverly McBrayer. One for resident artist, Pat Bauman, and the Balance in Mobiles project. This project will teach students about balance and will have them build a mobile. The other grant for resident artist, Elizabeth Garlington and the First Grade Quilting Bee project. Students will learn how to make a quilt by using math, shapes and patterns to complete their project.
A TAPAS grant was given to Melanie Slimko for resident artist, Christopher Holt and the Creations and Adaptations project. In this project student will apply and synthesize what they have learned about animals adaptations in science through the creation of their own animals.
2009 - 2010 Awards
All five elementary schools are awarded an ACSF Innovation grant for Bringing Words to Life, a proposal written by Helga Graff, Chrystal Hendrix, Martha Hayes, Beverly McBrayer, and Linda Geer. This program brings award-winning, African American, North Carolina, author Carol Boston Weatherford to hour-long assemblies for all third through fifth graders, for which the students will have read her books and will complete follow-up activities.
All five elementary schools are awarded an ACSF Innovation grant for Science Notebooks, a proposal written by Donalyn Small. This program will engage students in writing about science exploration.
Ira B. Jones & Hall Fletcher schools are awarded an ACSF Innovation Grant for the Language for Learning program, a proposal written by Chris Cicotello and Amy Penland. The program will improve the oral language skills of kindergartners with weak language skills through daily instruction.
