Highlights of ACSF in Asheville High School

2011-2012 Awards

Amanda Schoonover, of Asheville High School, has been awarded an Innovation Grant for Science Olympiad.  This well-established national program provides opportunities for students to apply science, technology, engineering and math skills.  Science Olympiad allows enrichment for students who are interested in science and provides the opportunity for students to look deeper into specialized fields of science that are not included in the curriculum.  This innovative project will bridge the gap between students who have an interest in career and technical education and those students who excel in science.  Science Olympiad seeks to establish itself this year as a successful and well-respected extracurricular activity within the school community and state-wide.

Jerome Hughes, of Asheville High School, will be a Fellow on the project Teacher-to-Teacher.  Through this project Jerome and another AVID teacher will be trained by Princeton Review as SAT Test Prep Instructors.  They will then enmesh SAT strategies into the AVID elective and SAT preparation class curriculum.  The research will focus quantitatively on the level of improvement each student makes as measured by full-length practice SATs and actual SATs, and qualitatively on how the instruction impacts students' overall level of test taking anxiety measured by student and teacher surveys.
