Parsec Financial's Math Literacy Grant

Math Literacy Grants were established with funds awarded from the Parsec Prize in 2011, and matched by other businesses and individuals.  Parsec Financial has long maintained a significant commitment to charitable giving throughout the regions it serves, which include Western North Carolina and the Charlotte metro area.  Parsec is committed to supporting non-profits by dedicating 1% of its revenues to them via the Parsec Prize. Each year we raise funds to match their gift so that we can award grants to teachers that range in amounts from $200-$500. Please contact Leah Ferguson to inquire about supporting math education in our schools.

Objectives
  1. Increase math literacy to ensure students understand the math concepts related to real-world scenarios

  2. Make math more relevant through innovative, hands-on approaches to teaching

  3. Impact underserved students and close the achievement gap in math

 Grant Guidelines

  • Focus on increasing student achievement.

  • Provide some matching funds. Because the requests for support greatly exceed our ability to fund all projects, we invest in those efforts that are also supported by the school building, PTO and other sources.

  • Create collaboration. This might include cooperation between teachers, between schools, or between the schools and other organizations or agencies.

  • Benefit many. The project should have the potential for benefiting a significant number of students within the Asheville City Schools System, either within one year, or across many years with durable materials.

  • Plan to evaluate. Projects must have a clear plan for evaluation that is valid and specific.  Evaluations that rely on improved end of grade/course test scores as the sole evidence of impact will be given a lower priority.

Application Procedure:  Grants should be e-mailed to Kate Pett at Kate@acsf.org by 5 PM on January 20, 2012 and a hard copy with original signatures should arrive within three (3) business days. Send the hard copy by courier to Central Office or drop it off at 85 Mountain Street, Asheville, NC 28801

Applicants will receive notification of receipt of their grant.  Contact the ACSF Office if you have not heard within one week of submission.  Grants are awarded by a committee of board members and community volunteers within 6 weeks of application, and notification of awards is within 8 weeks.
