We need to ACT NOW to help SAVE OUR SCHOOLS
Help preserve as much funding as we can for Asheville City Schools and make sure public funding is shared fairly with charter schools – contact our local legislators either by mail, phone or email. Here are the main messages we want to get across:
1) Public funding for schools should be fair.
Schools should only receive public funds for programs they actually provide. Support HB 247 that keeps schools accountable for the public funds they receive. Read the bill here.
2) Funding Schools First is a top priority, and can be done with a balanced approach.
Support extending the 1 cent sales tax instead of letting it expire. This would preserve over 1 billion dollars and reduce school budget cuts. This costs an average of $9/month per tax payer in the state – but does NOT raise your taxes, you’re already paying it. There are going to be cuts, but big cuts will mean big losses in our children’s education.
3) Keep our City Schools - Oppose House Bill 131. House Bill 131 would result in a de-facto merging city and county school districts this would not be good for our students. Our school systems serve different populations, and serve them well. Read the Bill here.
