Academic Coach Program

We recruit, screen and train volunteer academic coaches (tutor/mentor) for all grade
levels. We are coordinating and placing 90 Volunteer Academic Coaches in the schools and at after-school partner sites this year.

You are Needed!!

We train our Academic Coaches to support students by assisting them with a variety of tasks that support educational success. If you care about the welfare of children, and

  • You can read well, or

  • You can write well, or

  • You can do math (simple problems like fractions and decimals or higher level Algebra and Geometry),
. . . Then we would love to talk to you about joining our wonderful volunteer community of academic coaches.

Your minimum commitment:

  • Three hours of training

  • One hour per week of coaching, during school hours (8:30-3:30) or at one of our after-school program sites: Delta House, Youthful Hand or the YWCA (3:45-4:45)

  • Coaching every week for one school year (you may start any time)
To help ensure a good experience for you and your student, we provide multiple training sessions where you will:

  • Meet Others Like Yourself: Successful coaches have wonderful stories to share about their experience.

  • Learn to Connect with Students: Do you know what is on the minds of middle school students today? Making a good connection facilitates the learning process.

  • Review Planning Materials: Academic Coaching is a process of meeting with the student’s teacher, planning the sessions, gathering materials, assisting the student and evaluating progress.

  • Get Great Tips: We provide excellent training sessions with experienced educators who provide literacy, math and student motivation techniques as well as other strategies.

  • Receive Useful Handouts: Everything you need to get started in one handy reference manual, including tips for connecting with students, literacy and math techniques and school calendar.
